7th Annual Arkhaios Film Festival
A Rich Tapestry of World Cultures

 

Call for Film Registration



  Pittsburgh, PA -  Filmmakers from around the world are invited to submit one of their films for screening and competition consideration to the 2019 Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival.
 

An annual event, Arkhaios takes place in October, during Archaeology Month celebration. There are two Arkhaios events: one in Columbia, South Carolina, with juried competition and awards, the second in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, showing the best films from the Arkhaios Official Selection. The film registration is for both Arkhaios events.​

Arkhaios is pleased to announce the addition of a new Underwater Archaeology films track, to complement the already existing World Heritage track, South Carolina Heritage track, and Pennsylvania Heritage track.

The Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Events corporation is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization producing the Arkhaios Film Festivals in South Carolina, and in Pennsylvania.

The multi-day Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival is an annual juried competition, part of the annual States Archaeology Month. It is free, open to the public, and is an educational event showcasing the discovery of past cultures often gained from archaeological research and illustrated through documentary films.


The Arkhaios Film Festival is sponsored by the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) and the Department of Anthropology of the University of South Carolina, the Greater Piedmont Chapter of The Explorers Club, in South Carolina, and in Pennsylvania by the Allegheny Chapter #1 and the Ohio Valley Chapter #22 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology.

NEW Underwater Archaeology

Film Award


  Pittsburgh, PA -  The 7th annual Arkhaios Film Festivals will take place in October 2019, in Columbia, South Carolina, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during Archaeology Month celebration. Arkhaios is pleased to announce the addition of a new Underwater Archaeology films track.


The films will be competing for the following awards granted by the Arkhaios Jury:
--  Grand Prize of the Arkhaios Film Festival

-- Best Cultural Heritage film

-- Best Archaeology film

-- Best South Carolina Heritage film

-- Best Pennsylvania Heritage film

-- And a NEW award for Best Underwater Archaeology film


In addition, the films are considered for the Arkhaios Founder award for Public Archaeology, and the festival attendees vote for the daily Audience Favorite Films awards.


                                    The new Underwater Archaeology  track is                                         under the direction of James D. Spirek, State                                         Underwater Archaeologist for the State of South                                       Carolina, Maritime Research Division, South                                                 Carolina Institute of Archaeology and                                                           Anthropology, College of Arts and Sciences at                                           the University of South Carolina, Columbia.
                                     

Jim’s responsibilities include managing and studying the maritime archaeological legacy residing in the lakes, rivers and coastal waters of South Carolina. Research interests lie in shipbuilding and seafaring of the 16th-century, civil war naval operations, and in providing public access to submerged maritime archaeological resources. Jim is co-editor of Submerged Cultural Resource Management: Preserving and Interpreting Our Sunken Maritime Heritage, and a co-contributor to Archaeology in South Carolina: Exploring the Hidden Heritage of the Palmetto State and Florida’s Lost Galleon: The Emanuel Point Shipwreck.
